Updates:
On Saturday 11 October 2025 the Marmen Quartet got the Berkhamsted Music season off to an outstanding start with spellbinding performances of string quartets across three centuries. Haydn’s Op 50 No.5 (1787) was a scintillating opener, where the performance matched the brilliance of the writing. Bartók’s second quartet (1918), written at one of the low points in Hungary’s history, made for a sombre but musically stunning, deeply affecting conclusion to the first half. At the start of the second half, Violist Bryony Gibson-Cornish described how she is acquiring her Amati viola, made in 1610. Debussy’s ageless string quartet of 1893 has rarely sounded better than in this group’s performance and provided considerable scope to appreciate and enjoy the wonderful sound Bryony gets from her Amati.
The Stradivari Trust is forming a syndicate to purchase the 1610 Amati for Bryony Gibson-Cornish as it has done for the instruments of many exceptional musicians over the past forty years. This syndicate is almost complete but there remain opportunities for music lovers to support Bryony.
Looking to our next concert, sadly we have to announce a change of programme for our Saturday 8 November concert. The Eblana String Trio has had to withdraw because of the serious illness of their violist. Our thoughts are with them at a difficult time.
We are grateful to the Cygnus Trio, a piano trio featuring Javier Montañana – violin, Hannah Lewis – cello, and Cesar Saura – piano for stepping in at the last minute. Hannah hails from Watford, but Javier and Cesar come from a bit further south, from Spain. They will be playing trios from their recent CD, by two Spanish composers, Arbós and Turina, followed by Beethoven’s Archduke Trio, always a favourite, which we believe will be an engaging and varied programme.
